Personals – I Think You Should Know
Instrumentation
voice and pit bandI Think You Should Know (from the musical Personals) is an intimate torch song for the stage or cabaret. A recent divorcée is unsure about returning to the dating scene. The man she’s brought home is not. She thinks he should go, maybe… Ria Jones sings from the Personals London cast album on Jay Records. This take has more of a cabaret flavor, while the original was funky, more like Earth, Wind & Fire! Music by Joel and Seth Friedman, Lyrics by Crane, Friedman, Kauffman. Interested? Materials are available through Concord Theatricals/Samuel French.
Program Note
Personals has a long and storied history. It began as we were all undergrads, me at BU, the rest at Brandeis. It opened at Brandeis’ Spingold Theater, proceeded to win the New England Theater College Festival, and then played to the American College Theater Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington. From there we did an eight-week USO joint US/NATO base summer tour throughout Germany and Italy. Fast forward, a revised Personals opened Off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theater, NYC. Fast forward even more, it debuted on London’s West End at the Apollo Theatre. In-between it has been produced at theaters large and small throughout the US. I still like the older more experimental, Sondheimian outtakes from the show when we were just kids. Maybe there’s a review in there somewhere.
Lyric (Crane, Friedman, Kauffman)
I think you should know
This is my first time
Since I left Michael
He was my husband
I think you should know
In case I faint, or scream, or die
In case I call out your name
You'll under stand why.
I think you should know
It's not good to kiss me there.
It makes me nauseous
My neck's very sensitive
But how could you know?
We only met three house ago.
Oh, God!
Do that again
I... I...
Think you should know:
I've been dreaming of this moment
For such a long time.
I wish I'd cleaned my apartment.
You have very nice skin.
I've been dreaming of this moment
For such a long time.
You are my fantasy
But before we begin:
I think you should know
That you're the only one.
Other than Michael,
He was my husband.
And you should know
Yes, no
I think he wine went to my head
I'll go make us a snack.
Oh, wait! Don't fold out the bed.
I think you should know
I dropped out of college.
I think you should know
I don't speak with my mother.
I think you should know
I talk when I'm nervous.
I love when you touch me.
I love Harold Robbins.
I think I should know
A lot more about you
Than I do.
I think I should know
I think I should know
That I think I should go...
I think.
Reviews
“The most effective songs are by Seth and Joel Friedman. Their ‘I Think You Should Know’, ‘A Little Happiness’, and ‘Picking Up The Pieces‘ leave the other five composers in oblivion. One cannot help but wonder if the finished product might not have been much more cohesive had they written the entire score.” Larry Ledford, Christian Science Monitor
“PERSONALS is a winner!…The brightest revue of the year, and indeed of many a year.” Clive Barnes, New York Post
“Personals is a revue that brims with good songs, good laughter and good performances… In ‘Mama’s Boys,’ Tim Reynolds, Lauren Coberly and Kristina Muhlker join in a rocking number reminiscent of those girl group songs of the Sixties. It’s one of the show’s highlights… Personals is good-spirited and good-hearted, and if you see it, you’ll have a good time. Bryan Wiggin, The Almanac
“Once in a blue moon, a show comes along that makes the whole elaborate charade worthwhile. This satirical revue… Personals is one such gem.” James Christopher, The Times (London)
” However, it is not just the hilarious sketches that make this show outstanding, it is also the songs with their great lyrics that are sung by a very talented cast. … If there was a show deserving of a West End transfer, this is it. Go see it now!” Darren Dalglish, London Theatre Guide Online
